My mother’s maternal side was a little more genteel, with the Thom family farming for several generations in the beautiful Perthshire hills and the Sutherland family, as the name might suggest, came south from the baron but beautiful Caithness and Sutherland coast. Here they lived a life of domestic service and general labouring, which on one occasion may have led to an illegitimate ancestral link to the Gordan clan. We’ve visited the area on several occasions and I’m, looking forward to many future visits and significantly more research.

The Thom family stories begin with my grandmothers family, farmers in Perthshire, and go back through the male line of her father.

We also cover the stories of some of the notable families that married the Thom ancestors.

Places We Lived

The Thom ancestors have been among the more mobile of our ancestors, gradually working their way around Scotland, from Caithness to Alloa to Perthshire. I’ve collated old photos and postcards for some of the places they lived which I will continue to add below – click to take a look at more.

My Research Trips and Visits

I continue to visit the places our ancestors lived, and I’ll continue to add them here.
