A nice clear February day in 2022, and good health, presented the ideal opportunity to have a ride down to Goole, with the promise of lunch out.

George & Joseph Barrett, with Clara Blacker at the blacksmith shop in Airmyn, 1890s

First stop was Airmyn, where we parked at the Percy Arms and took a look at the building in the car park, believed to be the blacksmith workshop run by Joseph Barrett, my grandmother’s father. This photo shows what looks very similar – see what you think.

We then had a lovely lunch in the Percy Arms before a short walk along the river bank.

Next stop Goole and a walk along Morley Street past John’s childhood home. We then drove along Couper Street, and Moorland Road, looking for Wesley House. Not surprisingly, we didn’t find it, as it was demolished along with most of Couper Street, many years ago. We did see the chapel and another large house though, which for a moment could have been mistaken for Wesley House.

And at age 93, it was time to head home, happy that we’d had such a good trip out!
